Celebrated Halloween in a wonderfully pagan way tonight, out in the woods, round a campfire, sharing pumpkin soup, hot chocolate and spooky stories. Fantastic event organised by the West Boldon Lodge (the environment education centre).

A couple of days ago we were in some ancient woodland down in Kent (half term so down to visit my mum), the Blean, huge area, lots of beech, with a long history of use for coppicing, and spectacular autumn colours.

And this is all against the backdrop of the latest insanity announced by the Coalition government, selling off half the nation’s forests – even Thatcher didn’t manage to privatise the green lungs of our island, though she tried, but had to abandon the sale due to public condemnation. She did of course manage to privatise our water which is equally appalling…
