Our first Green Mayor candidate for North Tyneside, Martin Collins, polled 2000 first preference votes, and more than that again of the second preference votes. Unfortunately of course this was not enough to win! But we did at least beat the fascist National Front candidate into last place. The Tory won, ousting the Labour incumbent, following the trend of the county council election results today – though the Green Party has gained 6 seats across the country.

I went to the count today to be a counting agent, scrutiny being vital part of the democratic process, and to support the North Tyneside Green Party members who have worked extremely hard over the last couple of months. The reward for their work has been a flurry of new members, some of whom immediately got active and went out delivering leaflets.

This was our strategy, with there being no local council elections this year in the North East. So in that light it has been a success. Now roll on Sunday night and we get the European election results….
