Yesterday I was interviewed by BBC’s Look North at Sunderland’s St Peter’s Metro station, discussing the need for efficient and low carbon public transport.  Metro already fits the bill, but Nexus and the Tyne and Wear PTA are putting the running of some of the Metro system out to private tender.

Metro is already the best performing local train network in Europe.  Nexus has failed to consult the public and it’s users, or provide a coherent rationale for privatisation. As we’ve already seen with the failed Metronet PFI in London, privatising essential public transport infrastructure carries a huge risk which we can ill afford.

If it ain’t broke…
